Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, in San Francisco. He studied piano as a boy but turned to the guitar in his teens. In 1965, he formed the band Grateful Dead. Closely involved with the San Francisco hippie movement and the use of drugs such as LSD, the band first played “psychedelic” rock but moved on to a more diverse repertory of rock styles in the 1970s. Having previously studied at the San Francisco Art Institute as a teenager, Garcia embarked on a second career in the visual arts in the late 1980s. During the last few years of his life Jerry had several art shows in different cities in the United States, and sold hundreds of his original works and thousands of lithographs. He often attended these shows and enjoyed meeting people who shared his interest in the visual arts. Despite Garcia’s efforts to improve his lifestyle, all of the years of hard living caught up with him. He died of heart failure on August 9, 1995, in Forest Knolls, California. Today his art pieces frequently achieve 6 figure amounts at auctions.
